"Fly" Said the Crow. "You remember how, don't you?"

"Yes, of course." I said. "I just happen to forget when I wake up."

"Well, follow me then!" The Crow called in a shrill voice. "There is plenty more for you to remember."

My entry for the "Mask of Thyself" monthly challenge at #LeatherMaskArt and an excuse to make a mask I've been wanting to do for a long time. It's my first mask with a bird beak and first try at inserting a cabochon.

We were to make a mask to represent ourselves and I came round to combining two animals I find myself associated with symbolically - the Butterfly and the Crow.

Butterflies for their free spiritedness, creative chaos, and metamorphic qualities. Crows for their transformative powers, their link to the spirit realm, secret knowledge, and a propensity for collecting shiny and interesting things (of which I am a collector myself).

I've always been drawn to tricksters and transformative beings in art and literature. I think this reflects a habit in myself to always seek knowledge (even if it's forbidden), to experiment with new ideas and skills, and a fascination with strange and lucid dreams.

I'm somewhat surprised no angels or roses worked their way into this, but what is the human identity if we can distill all of it into a single mask?

Carved by hand from 8 oz. leather, painted with acrylics, sealed with Satin varnish. The gemstone cabochon is a Labradorite with a brilliant green flash to it while the dangling jewels are a mix of Red Agate, Labradorite, and Moonstone. The mask is held to the face with elastic bands.

A tutorial on setting a cabochon can be seen here:

My friend... we are kindred spirits you and I... I am always associated with the trickster. I feel like you carry a lot of Raven medicine in you. You describe many aspects of Raven medicine when refering to Crow. Both are deeply rooted in the transformative... but while Raven represents Magic... Crow represents Law. Sacred Law. This is good stuff!! I salute you and your wonderful art!
