Polymer Clay: FAQ
Does it matter what kind I buy?
Yes, it matters what *kind* you buy, but it doesn't really matter which brand-- just whichever one is easier for you to work with. Make sure it's bakeable clay and not modeling clay. It WILL melt in the oven (For example, using non-bakeable modeling clay as a filler for larger sculptures may or may not result in said sculpture cracking/exploding and oozing hot, melted slime. …Not that I'd know that from first-hand experience or anything. Nonetheless, you have been warned). Some polymer clay brands are Fimo, Sculpey, Premo (I believe this is made by Sculpey), and Kato.
What's the difference between the different brands?
FIMO Soft—Soft, and sturdier when baked because it stays slightly flexible. The darker colors will stain your hands, but this can be washed off easily with some good dish-soap. Non-toxic.
FIMO Classic—Basically the same as FIMO Soft, but it's harder. Go figure. Non-toxic.
FIMO Effects—Cool

Artisan of the Month! I’ve featured this artisan before, but Cyndy Salisbury has been creating even more amazing masks since then! I love the dreamlike quality and texture of her masks with so many fragile seeming details.

I transfer my love of painting fantasy art onto the canvas of leather.

Currently based in Atlanta, Georgia, I learned my trade from the tutorials of Andrea Masse-Tongetti (also known as Merimask). Andrea's techniques helped me to finally discover an outlet for my love of the symbolism and beauty of masks, which I had previously only explored via my writings and illustrations.

I have been crafting masks ever since that very first experiment in 2009. I work as a fantasy illustrator by day, where my love of Art Nouveau and Romantic art inspires my leather crafts.

My leather items are meticulously carved by hand, soaked in water, and baked in the oven to harden them. After hardening, I paint my items by hand, where I get to have the real fun of the entire process. For more info, see my FAQ.

You can watch videos of my process on YouTube:…

If you're curious about my illustration work, you can find it at AngelaSasser, while you can read my writings at AngelaSasser-story.

You're welcome! You've given me new inspiration and respect for wire-wrapping.:) I'm looking for a little starter kit to get me going at current. So hard to find wire that's not overly shiny!
KarenOlwenDesigns Featured By Owner Feb 24, 2010   Artisan Crafter
I agree about the shiny wire..:) That's mainly why I use copper - and then I oxidize it with liver of sulphur, which is not too expensive either - I'm a big fan of making pretty things with minimal

Here's where I get my copper wire:

It's pretty cheap there..:) Have fun!

Thanks for the handy links! I actually found some colored wire sets that aren't so shiny and that look pretty cool at Michaels too, though I imagine buying it in larger quantities is more cost effective! At any rate, I will most certainly be venturing into this territory soon:D
